The Downtown EVENTS Programme

Downtown in Business prides itself on hosting an eclectic mix of quality events that suit ambitious entrepreneurs and business leaders. Breakfast gatherings over coffee; lunches with top speakers; premier gala dinners and exclusive, intimate ‘invitation only’ dinners are among the range of networking opportunities we offer to our members. The very best hotels, restaurants and conference spaces are where this exciting programme of activity is presented; some of the regions very best politicians and business leaders are among our speakers; ambitious, modern, high growth business owners make up our audiences. Here is a brief description of the regular events that Downtown organises.

Policy Forums

Policy Forums

Leading politicians and decision makers regularly address Downtown members on key issues affecting economic development, commerce and the topical political debates and discussions of the day. These events take place on a quarterly basis and generally attract around 70-100 business leaders. Speakers at DIB policy forums have included Chancellor George Osborne; Manchester City Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein; Liverpool elected mayor Joe Anderson; Lancashire County Council Leader Jenifer Mein; Lord Michael Heseltine; Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna; Employment Minister Esther McVey; chief executive of Leeds City Council Tom Riordan; Lord Andrew Adonis and Justice Minister Chris Grayling. A great opportunity of keeping in touch with public affairs and policy issues at a local, regional, national and international level, whilst connecting with business peers in your region.

Leading entrepreneurs, business owners and opinion formers present advice, tips and anecdotes relating to their business successes (and failures), and offer guidance, support and views on the existing business climate. A fantastic way of learning from those who have ‘been there and done it’, keep abreast of changes in a range of key business areas including professional services, marketing and finance, whilst networking with businesses with a high growth mind-set. Contributors to DIB Enterprise events have included property tycoon Andrew Rosenfeld; Bruntwood chief executive Chris Oglesby; leading international business mentor Michael Finnigan; the CEO of the Women’s Organisation Maggie O’ Carroll; Bank of England Agent John Young; top female entrepreneur and successful exporter Melissa Burton of Goody Good Stuff; internet entrepreneur Ajaz Ahmed; Emma Jones of Enterprise Nation; Futurist Tom Cheesewright and Tesco Clubcard founder Edwina Dunne.

These morning sessions have a fabulous Downtown buzz as members connect over great coffee, bacon butties (with a veggie option if that’s your preference), followed by an inspirational presentation from a leading personality from the business community. Informal it may be, but there is business to be won; motivation to be absorbed and fun to be had too. A great way to start your business day, sample the ambience of a leading city venue and get to know a good number of business leaders and entrepreneurs from across the region.

A quick 90 minute lunch at a top city restaurant with a leading contributor from the region, this popular quarterly get together is always a sell out! Manchester City Council Leader Sir Richard Leese; Shadow Treasury Minister Rachael Reeves; chief constable Sir Peter Fahy; Skills & Training boss Barbara Spicer; Shadow Minister Luciana Berger; Transport select committee chair Louise Ellman and Andy Bounds, best- selling author of business classic ‘The Jelly Effect’ have been among our ‘Leaders Lunch’ speakers.

The legendary quarterly Downtown evening event that attracts up to 200 business leaders who are looking to ‘work hard and play hard’. No boring speeches, no sales pitches and no three minute ‘elevator’ presentations, this is modern networking in a modern setting! Great connections can be made in a relaxed, social environment – and sexy networking offers the ideal backdrop to do just that.

A hot topic discussed, facilitated by a member of the Downtown executive team and debated by twelve business owners and entrepreneurs, Roundtable discussions give you the opportunity to connect with some of the leading ‘movers & shakers’ in your region. Each discussion is videoed and featured on the Downtown website.

‘Invitation Only’ Dinners

Hosted by a member of the DIB executive team, these exclusive dinners are held in some of the top private dining rooms in the city. A leading politician, decision maker or entrepreneur leads a general and informal discussion over a three course meal, with fifteen of Downtown’s partners, sponsors and VIP members enjoying a unique networking opportunity in an intimate but informal environment.

Downtown hosts a range of gala award dinners across the North of England, celebrating the success of businesses and individuals from the world of commerce. Our awards events are recognised as unique, dynamic, exciting, fun – and not-to-be-missed. The incredible Sefton Park Palm House in Liverpool, Manchester’s Cathedral and exclusive Lancashire hotel Stanley House are among the venues that have played host to DIB’s premier award evenings.

DIB hosts an annual conference in each Downtown region, with a ‘market place’ of exhibitors; a range of great speakers and an opportunity for 150 to come together to discuss, debate and connect.

Business Week

Business Week

An annual week of eclectic conversations and discussions on a variety of business and political topics, led by some of the regions’ top speakers. Each region enjoys its own exclusive week, and the events programme includes policy and enterprise forums, Roundtable discussions and an ‘Invitation only’ dinner.
