Liverpool Council is to axe 1,000 jobs over the next three years. Trades unions have warned staff that the local authority is looking to shed 1,000 jobs out of its 10,000 workforce because of a “looming” financial crisis.

Unemployment across the city region fell to its lowest level for six months as the local economy continues to show resilience despite the worst recession in decades.

Liverpool's Labour group leader Joe Anderson and his deputy, Paul Brant, ruled themselves out of the race to replace Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy.

Three out of four people who took part in a council survey wanted Liverpool to be governed by an elected mayor.

An inquiry has found that Liverpool's future economic success is dependent on revitalising the north of the city.

Mersey MPs have urged Gordon Brown not to axe childcare tax breaks worth up to £2,400 a year – warning the move will punish women and force many out of work.

Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy's announcement that she is to resign, has sparked a race between senior Liverpool councillors and rising Labour stars to replace her.

Lloyds Banking Group is to cut 5,000 more jobs by the end of next year as it continues to reduce overlap following its merger with HBOS last year.

After winning £45,570,835.50 on the Euromillions on Friday. The lucky ticket holder finally came forward to collect their prize.

David Haye awoke as WBA heavyweight champion, after defeating Nikolay Valuev in Nuremberg.

And Everton beat West Ham 2-1 at Upton Park.
